Sid the Seagull to visit Tennis Townsville

Sid the Seagull partners with Tennis Townsville for sun safety

Tennis Townsville has doubled up with Cancer Council Queensland to encourage kids to stay SunSmart these holidays!  The club is hosting a School Holiday Clinic and the Cancer Council’s mascot, Sid the Seagull will be appearing to remind children – and parents – about the importance of staying SunSmart when outdoors.

Centre manager, Liz Jones, said sun safety for children was extremely important at the club.

“The holidays always attract a lot of new children to the clinic, and we want to educate them about sun protection right from the beginning,” Ms Jones said.

“A lot of sport, particularly tennis, is played outdoors and for long hours in the sun. We do not allow children onto the court without a hat, and we provide free sunscreen for them to use.  By having someone like Sid the Seagull at the clinic, kids will be excited and motivated to learn about being SunSmart now and for the remainder of their lives.”

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan urged all Queenslanders to remain vigilant about sun protection.  “Sun safety is required when the UV index is three or above – in Queensland, this is all year round,” Ms McMillan said.  “It’s great to see community organisations joining in on our initiatives and policies to encourage SunSmart habits from a young age.”

“When outdoors, all Queenslanders should Slip on protective clothing, Slop on minimum 30+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on sunglasses.”

Sid the Seagull will be appearing at Tennis Townsville on Thursday 6th July between 3:30pm and 5:30pm.  For more information contact Tennis Townsville on 0407 186 153.
