SPORTS AND RECREATION INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM- SUCCESSFUL GRANT!

Tennis Townsville is very excited to have secured a $318,000 grant from the Queensland Government round 3 of the Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Program to upgrade the four tennis courts in Queens Park.
Tennis Townsville will contribute $90,000 towards the redevelopment

Former Tennis Townsville President and very active committee member, Vic Bayer said the upgrade will include:

• Moving the four courts towards Paxton Street and thereby creating a 4 mtre walkway between the groups of courts.
• The four tennis courts will be realigned to be ITF standards.
• New fences will replace all the existing fences on the four courts and around the walkway. The fences were damaged by Cyclone Yasi.
• Lights will be moved and consideration is being given to changing the lights on courts 11 to 13 to the same type as on court 10.
• The surfance is going to be Rebound Ace Synpave courts with green/terracotta colours.
• The walkway will be shaded either with sail cover or metal and will have tables, chairs and water fountain facilities.
• The other work that will be required includes construction of new retaining wall, excavation and concreting 4 x 73 metres for court extensions, grinding of all the area and extensive drainage.

The overall objective is to start the upgrade in January 2011.

GOVERNMENT GRANTS- SOME SUCCESS

Tennis Townsville was successful with obtaining three grants:

• Replacement of corroded fences on courts 2 to 4. TTI obtained $26,800 from Gambling Community Benefit Fund to replace the fences. The fencing work will be carried out NQ Fencing during next school holidays to inconvenience to playing members.
• Gambling Community Benefit Fund approved an application by TTI to install solar panels and solar water heater. The total cost of solar panels and solar water heater is $11,770.
• The Townsville City Council provided $2,500 towards producing the history book for the 100 year centenary.
