“My computer lessons have been very rewarding for me. To learn about the computer has opened up a whole new world for me! I can converse with people I've never meet , put my photos on facebook, email lots of friends & especially family, it's very interesting new technology, and also with the help of Karolien Selen I am very grateful to her, without Karolien's patience i would not have succeeded so fast to learn all these new things. Thank you and also thank you to Tennis Townsville” Margie Goodall, Pimlico

“I would just like to say many thanks for the excellent tuition I have received through the Broadband for Seniors program. Now I can load pictures from my camera onto the computer, then save them to a hard drive or memory stick etc. Also I can now use a spread sheet in Excel and can navigate my way around Google and Skype. The computer is now fun. Most of all I would like to thank you for your patience. The one on one training with Karolien is really great.” Marie Buckley, Rosslea.

The Broadband for Seniors Kiosk has been extremely helpful, I walked in unable to type and now I’ve learned so much. I’ve purchased a computer through the Broadband for Seniors and I’m getting it installed this week. I’ve been taught how to resize photos; I’ve also set up my own Gmail account which means I can now send through photos to my family.” Nell Cooke, Kirwan

DEVELOPMENT

Tennis Townsville has recently spent $50,000 on improving the conditions around the entry to the complex. Here are some of the improvement that have been made so far:

  • A wall with a new Entrance sign
  • A shelter for the entrance
  • A thriving garden to beautify the area
  • A water bubbler has been installed
  • The pathway has been painted
  • New shade covers have been installed
  • Synthetic grass under the grandstand

Tennis Townsville has secured grants totalling $318,000 from the Queensland Government round 3 of the Sports and Recreation Infrastructure Program to upgrade the four tennis courts in Queens Park. With Tennis Townsville contributing $90,000 a total of $408,000 will be spent on the upgrade. Vic Bayer said the upgrade will include:

  • Moving the four courts towards Paxton Street and thereby creating a 4 metre walkway between the two groups of courts.
  • The four tennis courts will be realigned to ITF standards.
  • New fences will replace all the existing fences on the four courts and around the walkway.
  • Lights will be moved and consideration is being given to changing the lights on courts 11 to 13 to the same type as on court 10.
  • The surface is going to be Rebound Ace Synpave courts with green/terracotta colours.
  • The walkway will be shaded either with sail cover or metal and will have tables, chairs and bubbler facilities.
  • Other work that will be required includes construction of new retaining wall, excavation and concreting 4 metres x 73 metres for court extensions, grinding of all the area and extensive drainage.
Plans are being designed, scope of works is well advanced and Tennis Townsville is hoping to submit to Townsville City Council development plans within the next couple of weeks.
Members of the club who are interested in tendering for work on any part of the Queens Park courts upgrade should contact either Peter Duncan (0488 720 097) or Vic Bayer (0407 203 955)
