TOURNAMENTS

A great way to fill in the holidays with fun and exercise is joining our holiday clinics. The clinics are suitable for children of all ages (4 years and upwards) and abilities. All they need to have is a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and a racquet (we have spare racquets if required). 

Round Robin Tennis Tournament for the older kids will also be held. Round Robin is for boys and girls that play fixtures; they will receive 1 hour of coaching then play in a Round Robin Tournament where points are given for each set one. It will be a doubles format and at the end of the 3 days the winners will receive a prize.
Each child receives a goodies bag from Officeworks and a participation certificate at each holiday clinic.
Cost is $65 per child or $130 per family. Casual rate is $30 per session

Tennis Townsville extends its appreciation to Officeworks for their support.

The establishment of the Pickerings DMG Junior Touring Squad is an initiative of Tennis Townsville designed to encourage and assist our junior members to:

• Increase their participation in tennis tournaments
• Further develop and improve their tennis playing skills
• Develop a strong team bond with other Junior Touring Squad members
• Be recognised as emerging tennis talent or future champions.

This program is directed at players between 9 and 18 years of age.

Selected participants will receive:

• Two Tennis Townsville Junior Touring Squad Polo Shirts.
• Subsidies* towards the cost entering designated tournaments in 2012.

The Touring Squad is divided into two groups depending on participant commitment and their level of tournament play.
*The terms and conditions of the subsidies will be sent to members of the squad.

Squad members will be expected to:

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to improvement.
• Attend the primary squad training sessions Wednesday and/or Friday evenings.
• Attend a second training session where practical (could be Tuesday/Thursday squad or private lessons)
• Fixture play with the adult fixtures.

The PICKERINGS DMG Touring Squad will be divided into two tours,

The Blue touring group will concentrate in attending the following tournaments:

• Rod Laver State Junior Championships in Brisbane
• State Age Championships in Rockhampton
• North Queensland Ergon Energy Junior Championships
• Mid-North Junior Age Championships
• Far North Junior Age Championships
• NQ Head Junior Masters "A" Circuit Tournaments at
       - Townsville
       - Home Hill
       - Mackay
       - Cairns
       - Ingham
       - Townsville (Regional Finals)

The Green touring group will concentrate in attending the following tournaments:

• North Queensland Ergon Energy Junior Championships
• NQ Junior Masters "B" Circuit Tournaments at:
       - Townsville
       - Bowen
       - Ayr
       - Charters Towers
       - Home Hill

The Junior Development squad is available to juniors who are interested in improving their tennis skills to a level where they can compete in higher level tournaments and fixtures.

The program is Thursday from 4.30pm to 6.00pm

Missed prepaid lessons can be made up on Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. Casual rate is $25 per lesson.

The MLC Hot Shots program is the starting point for future champions. MLC Hot Shots is a fun and exciting way for children to learn the game of tennis. Children as young as 4 years of age join in the learning through play philosophy where children learn to serve, rally and score. Hot Shots is revolutionising tennis by using modified red, yellow and green balls and modified courts size and nets. The program is held Saturday mornings, the MLC Junior Hot Shots is for beginners (4-6 years) goes for 1 hour from 8.30am-9.30am. The next group, MLC Hot Shots goes for 2 hours from 8.30am-10.30am

Children 4-6 years in the Junior MLC Hot Shots beginners group have 1 hour of coaching due to their age and concentration levels. 

Red-Hot Shots on Court 8 : Beginners Program developed and supervised by Wayne Hannah our head coach and led by Mike Peever our most experienced coach for this age group.  Age group 4 years plus.  Emphasis on hand eye coordination, basic strokes development and a gradual introduction into the MLC hot shot game format in the second hour through a combination of fun games and activities.

Orange-Hot Shots on Court 7: Intermediate Program.  Led by Wayne Hannah, the program further develops tennis skills.  Players who possess basic ball and racquet skills are introduced to intensive stroke development with an emphasis on forehand, backhand, volley, smash and serve for the first hour, followed by the Hotshot rally competition games format where skills are practised.   

Green-Hot Shots on Courts 1 to 6: Match play and tactics. This program will be coached by Peter Duncan, our MLC Hot shots coordinator, Ken and Fred. Advanced racquet skills including topspin, slice, angles, lobs and net attack are taught and developed in the coaching hour followed by Saturday morning fixtures. 

Jacko’s Giants on Courts 9 to 13: Match play and tactics. Coach Franc Giacomantonio ( Jacko) – a more advanced group, which builds on the Green Hotshots program. Advanced drills and strokes are further developed in fixture play.

Just 10 More Minutes: Aw Come on, Just another 10 Minutes, please.  Peter has agreed to spend another 10 minutes at the end of the coaching sessions with players that want some additional help on a stroke or something they found hard to do during the lesson.  Ask your Coach, Robyn or find Peter on Blue Court between 10.30 and 11.15.  We will do up to 3 sessions with between 1 and 3 players.
