| HISTORY |
Tennis Townsville celebrated a truly magnificent milestone in August 2011, 100 years as an Association on its present location of 32 Burke Street, North Ward in Townsville.
A centennial accomplishment such as this demonstrates the perseverance and dedication by all those involved within the Tennis Townsville Community. Aside from successfully operating the North Queensland Open Tournament for over 100 years, Tennis Townsville have played host to various events including both local and state championship tournaments. A major tennis highlight has been the club's involvement in one of the most highly regarded tennis events, an Australian Davis Cup tie. On two occasions, Tennis Townsville provided invaluable volunteer support throughout the Davis Cup ties, which ultimately saw Australia defeat Uzbekistan in 1998 and Thailand in 2008.
Tennis has been an integral part of the social recreational fabric of the citizens of Townsville for more than 125 years. It enraptures the very hearts of men and women, boys and girls of all ages and diversity and skills. And to each it satisfies one or more desires to be healthy, social, competitive, professional, sportmanlike and even as a form of relaxation which has added the benefits of fun and enjoying the sport.
In recognition of its outstanding achievements as an Association during the 2008 year, Tennis Townsville was also awarded the Queensland Affiliate Club of the Year.
No organisation, especially community based not-for-profit ones like Tennis Townsville can survive, let alone function successfully and professionally, without the tireless contributions of a large number of volunteers, employees and the generous support of sponsors and funding bodies, locally and at State and Federal level.
A publication was produced in 2011 to celebrate 100 years of tennis. The book, Play On’ is for sale at Tennis Townsville for $15. For more information contact the club on 4721 5129
